Description:
Over the years I've often visited this quiet, tranquil spot to absorb its ocassionally misty atmosphere and to jump the rocks, sometimes slipping on them in hiking boots that got wet. I've been there in all four seasons over the course of my adult life, but it also goes back to childhood. From the bright greens and hard light in summer, to the drab, but still comforting greys in the middle of a frigid winter, to a raging, frothy and overflowing river bank in the spring showing the rusty undertones. I've painted there on location a couple of times, first in oil, then in transparent watercolour, and I've also sketched it in pencil. This oil painting, "An Evening at the River in Fall," is a culmination of all these moments over my life. It was created in fall of 2021, but am just publishing it this year in 2024. The tree on the left of the picture has since fallen down across the river rocks. I was always drawn to that big rock, but I'm glad I caught the tree before it fell.
